Bernard "Johnny" Morrell, Jr.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard "Johnny" Morrell, Jr., a beloved husband of 58 years to his wife Linda, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who passed away at the age of 86. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard John Morrell and Elizabeth Grace Milton Morrell and sisters: Elizabeth Morrell, Anne Caskay and Barbara Lewis.

He was a proud Vietnam veteran who honorably served his country in the United States Army for 20 years. Following his military career, he continued a life of service, retiring from the state prison system. There, he dedicated himself to horticultural rehabilitation, teaching and working alongside inmates and helping them discover the value, patience, and pride that can come from working with the land.

Gardening was one of his greatest passions. He could often be found tending to his many plants and trees, especially his beloved banana trees. He found joy in watching things grow and took great pride in sharing what he had learned from others.

Above all, family was the center of his world. He was a devoted father to his four children and their spouses: John, James (wife, Kim), Jennifer (husband, David) and Vickey (husband, David) and took great joy in being a grandfather. His grandchildren, Christian (wife, Jessica), Breanna (husband, Evan), Gage (girlfriend, Angela) and Austin held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment with them. He was also blessed with a sister, Virginia Murrell and three great-grandchildren (Emma, Olivia and Bellamy) who brought him immeasurable happiness and pride especially in his final days.

A graveside service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, August 18th in the Speight-Taylor Cemetery in Lumberton. Reverend Rusty Rogers will officiate the service. 

Johnny will be remembered for his years of service, his love of gardening, his strength and dedication, and most of all, the love he gave to his family. Though he is deeply missed, his legacy lives on through his wife Linda, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched.

He served his country, served his community, nurtured the earth, and loved his family deeply. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
