Rudell McMillan, 95, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026. Born on August 25, 1930, in Bladen County, Rudell was the beloved son of the late Fred McMillan and Wilma Smith McMillan. Throughout his long and meaningful life, he remained devoted to his family, his work, and those fortunate enough to share in his kindness.
Rudell was a man who believed in the value of hard work. He spent his career working in construction, where he specialized in clearing land. Those who knew him can attest to his tireless dedication and strength, traits that defined his character both on the job and in his personal life.
A spirited soul, Rudell was known for his lighthearted nature. He loved to pick and play with people, always ready with a gentle tease or a quick smile. His affection extended beyond people; he had a remarkable fondness for animals, and it was said he could turn any creature into a friend. Animals seemed instinctively to trust him, a testament to his gentle spirit.
Above all, Rudell cherished his family. He found immense joy in their company, and family gatherings were among his happiest times. His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, siblings, and extended family.
Rudell is survived by his daughters: Deborah McMillan of Ammon, Sharon Smith and husband Michael of White Oak, Jessica Tatum and husband David of Elizabethtown; grandchildren: Kenneth McMillan, Kevin McMillan, Zachary McMillan, Heather Cooper, James Smith, Stephanie Thompson; great-grandchildren: Austin Cooper, Brittany Tatum, Lauren McMillan, Katlynn Tatum, Faith Cooper, Nolan Tatum, Cole McMillan, Sydney Thompson, Sierra Thompson, Jameson Tatum, Declan McMillan, Madilyn Hall, Autumn Edge, McKenzie Jacobs, Seth Jacobs, Luke Jacobs; great-great grandchildren: Vera Cooper, Adalynn Tatum, and Gracie Stephens. He is also survived by his siblings: Alton McMillan, Fred McMillan, Jr., Judy Cashwell, and Ann Roundsville.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fannie Mae McMillan; sons: Jimmy McMillan, Rodney McMillan, and Stanley McMillan; daughter, Teresa Smith; grandchildren: Donald Evans, Jr., Bristle Edge, and Rebecca Hall; brothers: Earl McMillan, MacRae McMillan, Richard McMillan and Shep Smith; sisters: Eunice Manning and Wilde Gray White.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 22nd from 1-1:45pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with a funeral service immediately following at 2pm. Burial will follow services in the Briar Branch Church Cemetery.
Rudell’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. He leaves behind a family strengthened by his loving influence, a circle of friends who cherished his company, and a legacy of humor, kindness, and unwavering dedication. He touched countless lives and will forever be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, and friend.
