Roger "Hugh" Johnson, a dedicated and respected member of his community known affectionately as "Gravedigger," passed away on June 7, 2026, at Novant-New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on January 6, 1956, in Pender County, North Carolina, Roger devoted much of his life to his work as a self-employed gravedigger, serving numerous local funeral homes and cemeteries, including our own, Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home.
Throughout his career, Hugh was recognized not only for his exceptional work ethic but also for his compassionate and gentle nature. His commitment to his profession was matched only by his devotion to his family, embodying the qualities of a hard worker, a loving husband, and a great father. His presence brought comfort and peace to many during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Hugh is survived by his beloved wife, Tracy Johnson, who stood steadfastly by his side; his daughter, Malyssa Nicole Johnson, step-son, David Rich, who remain a testament to his love and dedication; and his sisters, Margie Todd of New Bern, North Carolina, and Janet Pusey and husband, George of Corpus Christi, Texas, who share in the deep loss of their brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Harper Johnson and Clara Johnson, whose memory he honored throughout his life.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N. Ingold Ave., Garland, NC. Reverend Richard Smith will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 PM, before the Memorial Service.
The family request that in lieu of flowers you make a donation in Hugh's name to your favorite charity or church.
