Alfreida Kemp Adams

Alfreida Kemp Adams, lovingly known as Freida to her family and friends, passed away on August 13, 2026, at UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, North Carolina, at the age of 80. Born on August 26, 1945, in Bladen County, Freida was the daughter of the late Kirby Leonadius Kemp and Mildred Perry Kemp. Her journey through life was marked by compassion, faith, and tireless dedication to serving others.

Freida’s early years shaped much of her generous spirit. At the age of sixteen, she and her sister Orrie were adopted by close family friends, Bradford and Mildred Barber, through which she gained four sisters and a brother. This extended family, woven together by love and kindness, became an enduring foundation in Freida’s life.

Her professional journey was one deeply rooted in service to others. Freida retired from the Bladen County Department of Social Services, where she diligently worked in children’s services. Even after retirement, her calling to care for others remained strong, leading her to serve as a private duty CNA for many years. Her sense of purpose and compassion touched countless lives through these roles, and they remain a testament to her steadfast commitment to her community.

Faith was the cornerstone of Freida’s life. A faithful member of Galeed Baptist Church, she dedicated herself to teaching children’s Sunday School, imparting spiritual lessons with devotion and joy. She repeatedly accompanied the youth on various mission trips, always outworking nearly everyone and inspiring others with her determination. As a cherished choir member and an essential part of the church kitchen committee, Freida's presence was felt at every gathering, big or small. Her remarkable work ethic and sincere generosity left lasting impressions within the church family.

Freida’s love for her community extended beyond the church. She was a fervent supporter of West Bladen basketball, making it to as many games as possible, especially when the Knights played in tournaments. If transportation was ever a challenge, she would always find a way—reflecting her unwavering loyalty and spirit.

Her faith and her heart were unwavering. Freida loved Jesus without question, and was a bold witness everywhere she went—her life itself a testament to the values she cherished. She often reminded those around her that a smile makes a difference, encouraging everyone simply to smile. Her warm presence, deep love for her family and church, and her affection for the beach were sources of joy for all who knew her.

Freida often reflected on an accident she experienced as a young woman, saying she knew from that day forward that she was meant to serve others. With quiet determination, she lived out that commitment every day, building a legacy of selfless love and dedication.

Freida leaves behind her sister, Orrie Gay (Bill) of Wilson; her niece, Ashlie Pope (Will) and their children, Dallas, Kemp and Ruby; her nephew, Chad and her adopted siblings: Denette, Darlene, Audrey, Alice and George and their children. She will also be missed by a special friend, Billy Ward and lifelong friend, Charles Weathers.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Galeed Baptist Church for their continued prayers and love for Alfreida. Deep gratitude is also expressed to the caring staff of UNC Health Southeastern and Harborview Nursing Facility, who provided compassionate care throughout her final days.

Freida's gentle spirit, steadfast devotion, and radiant smile will continue to inspire all those whose lives she touched.

A Visitation with Family and Friends will be held this Friday, August 21st from 10 o'clock in the morning until 10:45 am in the Galeed Baptist Church Sanctuary followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11 am with the Reverend Brett Young and Reverend Warren Hill officiating.
