He was predeceased by his wife, Nancye Sugg Johnson, his parents, J. Mansey Johnson and Vara Elizabeth Lee Johnson, his sister Matilda Langdon (Kirby), his brother J. Marvin Johnson (Gertrude), his sister Pauline Barrett (Perch), his brother Alsey Johnson (Fay), his brother Lee Johnson (Sally), his sister Marjorie Johnson (Paul), his brother Robert Johnson (Christine), his sister Edna Bryan (Mac), his brother Clyde Johnson, and his sister-in-law Sue Sugg Hill.

Clem was born on January 1, 1931 and was raised in the tight knit farming community of Meadow, NC just outside of Benson. He grew up on a farm with his 9 older siblings. His upbringing built a man of strong character, integrity and work ethic.

He graduated from Meadow School in 1949 as valedictorian and class president. He went on to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill in 1953 with an AB in chemistry. In February of 1954, he entered the US Army and served until February of 1956. During his time of service, Captain Johnson was the administrator of Womack Army Hospital.

After leaving the service, Clem entered Baltimore Dental School at the University of Maryland in 1956 and graduated in June 1960. After Passing the NC Dental Board that same year, Clem and Nancye moved to Bladen County NC. Clem practiced dentistry in Elizabethtown for sixty-two years - from July 29, 1960 until July 28, 2022.

Clem married the love of his life, Nancye Ann Sugg on November 26, 1955. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage.

Clem was born again, receiving the free gift of salvation, at the age of 12, and he was baptized by the Holy Spirit in 1973. God was the center of his life. He lived by the scripture found in Micah 6:8 “… to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

As one of his friends said recently, he did not like to be the center of attention or draw focus to himself. He wanted all glory to be given to God.

He truly loved his family - immediate and extended - and did all that he could to keep us together. He was very involved in keeping the Lee Family Reunion (his mother’s family) going after almost 75 years of gathering. He was also very involved in keeping the Johnson Family Reunion (his father’s family) going - reviving its gathering after 50 years in April 2023.

In Dad’s words: “Nancye and I have been blessed to realize that we should walk by faith and not by sight. We thank God that Jesus is Lord and that He continues to bless us immensely as we are so thankful that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the Life.”

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 18, 2026 from 10-10:30 am at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm in Benson, NC in the Roselawn Cemetery.
