Darrel Robert Melvin, 72, passed away peacefully at home in Clarkton, North Carolina, on February 26, 2026. Born on April 2, 1953, in Cheltenham, England, he was the son of the late Gladys Clayton Melvin and Colon Franklin Melvin.
Darrel taught history at Clarkton School of Discovery for 24 years. He coached football, basketball, and baseball, compiling countless undefeated seasons across his career. He spent evenings and weekends caring for the fields—fertilizing, managing the grounds, and painting the lines—so everything was perfect for game day. It was how he operated: the standard he set for himself was the standard he expected from those around him.
That standard went both ways. His players shaped him as much as he shaped them. Years later, he could still walk you through a game play by play—who was where and what happened. Many of his players stayed in touch long after they left his teams. He mentored them in the art of competition and the grace of resilience, instilling values that transcended the game. Above all, he held a quiet gratitude for every life he touched, never losing sight of the profound impact of a simple 'thank you.'
Outside of school, Darrel gave decades to the Clarkton Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as captain. His father served alongside him as fire chief—it was a family commitment. Darrel helped build the firehouse and answered countless calls in the middle of the night, not because he had to, but because that is who he was. Darrel was also a deacon at Clarkton Presbyterian Church. He used his faith as a source of strength that he carried with him through his struggles and triumphs.
He was also a dedicated NC State fan who attended countless Wolfpack football games over many decades. He was the kind of fan who showed up before the gates opened, ready to watch his Wolfpack. Embodying the late Jim Valvano’s creed to ‘never give up,’ he walked through life with a tireless spirit—always moving forward with a quiet courage and a heart full of purpose.
Above all his achievements, Darrel was most proud of his family. He took great pride in bragging about his children’s accomplishments whenever given the opportunity. His discipline and drive for excellence created a lasting foundation for them to grow from, teaching them the true value of integrity and hard work. His fiancé, Becky, was his closest companion, whom he talked with for hours every day. She was beside him through his health challenges and in the stands at NC State games—rain or shine, year after year.
Preceded in death by his parents, Darrel is survived by his fiancée, Becky Tidwell. He is also survived by his son, Colon Melvin, and wife Cassia; his daughter, Brandi Venema, and husband Peter; his sisters, Patricia Robinson, Deborah Melvin, and Pamela Bahm; and his close friend, Greg Priest, who was a constant presence—driving him where he needed to go, checking on him, and always being there when it mattered.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45pm on Saturday, March 7th, at Clarkton Presbyterian Church, with a funeral service following at 3pm. Rev. Barrett Ingram will be officiating the service. Burial will follow services in the Clarkton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Elf Angels Fund. Checks may be mailed to 10578 South College St, Clarkton, NC 28433 in care of Debbie Heustess.
