Ernest Truman Byrd

April 27, 1945 — December 1, 2025

Clarkton

Truman Byrd, a man of unwavering faith and gentle strength, entered the presence of his Savior with certainty and peace. Many people often asked if he was a preacher, but it was the way he lived—his kindness, humility, and devotion to Jesus—that preached the loudest. “Let your light so shine before men…” (Matthew 5:16). Without a doubt, Truman’s light shone brightly, and today he stands joyfully before the Father he loved so deeply.

Born on April 27, 1945, Truman lived a life marked by dedication: to God first, to his family second, and to himself last. He leaves behind a legacy of love, encouragement, and steadfast faith that will continue to guide the generations after him. His life embodied Micah 6:8: “To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Truman was a loving father to his children—Melissa Byrd (husband Jorge Martinez), Christopher Byrd, and Heather Cain (husband Christopher Cain). He was a proud grandfather to Summer Alsup (husband John Dean Alsup), who cherished his gentle humor and warm presence. To his family, he was a steady source of comfort, wisdom, and unconditional love—“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” (Proverbs 13:22)

Truman was the son of Charles Castle Byrd and Virginia Barnhill Byrd of Bladen County, NC. He was proceeded in death by his sisters Annie Byrd McKee and Hilda Byrd Melvin. He is survived by his brother Charles Castle Byrd, Jr.

Known to many as T-Byrd, he was loved for his friendliness, gentle laugh, and down-to-earth nature. In his younger years, he enjoyed coon hunting and the quiet peace of the outdoors. He worked for many years at Cape Craft and later Interior Wood, and he was not only an electrician but also a true jack of all trades. He cared deeply about others, especially the elderly, and was always ready to lend a hand or offer kindness where it was needed. His life reflected the heart of Galatians 6:2: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

More than anything, Truman would want those he leaves behind to love God wholeheartedly and to keep their house in order. He would remind us that we take nothing with us from this world, and that this life—beautiful as it is—will pass away. Scripture tells us in James 4:14, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.”

This life passes quickly. Are you ready? Truman’s greatest hope was that everyone he knew would experience the same saving grace that guided his life and prepared him for eternity. As Jesus said in John 14:2, “In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you.” Truman is now home.

Truman Byrd lived with purpose, loved without limits, and left a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
