Gary Houston Skipper II

Gary Houston Skipper, II, 37, of Raleigh, formerly of Abbottsburg passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Billy and Faye Creech and aunt, Jane Starnes.

Houston began a career in construction as a pipefitter and was very talented in that field, however, he longed to have a job in a different environment. So, he attended school at Sherrill’s University of Barbering and Cosmetology, finished his barber apprenticeship and began to work for Man-Mur Barbershop. When not working, Houston enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending NC State ballgames. Some of his best days by far were racing days with his Uncle Richard, Aunt Donna and family.

Houston lived with a generous heart, a ready smile and a commitment to helping others. He inspired everyone around him. He was a caring son, brother, daddy, uncle, and friend who touched a multitude of lives with an outstretched hand and warm spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and joy.

Left to cherish his memory are Mama Cynthia Horne (Eddie Horne), Daddy Gary Skipper, one son, Lawson Hester, sister Mindy Cartrette (Steve), nieces RaeAnna Cartrette, Lily Cartrette, nephew Oliver Cartrette, great nephew Waylon Jacobs, and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 1-2 pm at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown followed by a funeral service at 2 pm with the Reverend Dean Jackson officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Oak Dale Baptist Church Cemetery, 6233 Joe Brown Hwy North, Whiteville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Healing Transitions, 1251 Goode St. Raleigh, NC 27603, 919-838-9800 or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
