George Washington Smith Jr., 92, entered into eternal rest at his home on Saturday, September 10, 2011. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was an active member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years.
Mr. Smith is survived by two sons: Wilson and wife Etta, and Gerald and wife Shirley, both of Bladenboro; two daughters: Marlene Johnson and husband Merle of Bladenboro, and Janice Taylor and husband Jimmy of Elizabethtown; one brother, Erwin Smith and wife Vera of Wilmington; 16 grandchildren: Greg Taylor and wife Pam, Richard Bailey and wife Shirley, Vanessa Ussery and husband Scott, Jonathan Taylor and wife Sharon, Stephen Taylor and wife Lisa, Ernest Smith and wife Gwenda, Darryl Smith, Grace Cain and husband Patrick, Barry Smith and wife Kim, Michael Johnson and wife Diana, Dwayne Johnson and wife Wendy, Daphne Fletcher and husband Lewis, Chris Smith and wife, Kim, Andrea Singletary and husband Isaac, Christy Horrell and husband Dean, and Miranda Guyton; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mazelle Smith; two brothers, Foster and Edgar Smith; and one sister, Ruth Peterson.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 11, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home; other times at the home, 510 Clayton Pait Road, Bladenboro.
Services will be Monday, September 12, at 2:00 PM at Zion Hill Baptist Church of Bladenboro with Rev. Jonathan Taylor and Rev. W.C. Baxley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Crest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zion Hill Baptist Church, 770 Singletary Mill Pond Rd., Bladenboro,NC 28320, or to the Gideons, Bladenboro.
