Joseph Robert Abbott, age 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 12, 2026. He was a devoted Christian, a loving family man, and a steady, faithful presence in the lives of all who knew him.
Joe was a hardworking and dedicated man throughout his life, spending more than 28 years with the North Carolina Department of Corrections, where he built lifelong friendships and was part of a tight-knit crew at White Lake Prison Camp until its closure. He was also known in the community as one of the proud owners and friendly faces of The Log Cabin Restaurant, where his strong work ethic, warm smile, and genuine care for others made everyone feel like family.
He was preceded in death by his firstborn daughter, Crystal Abbott Coffman; his mother, Norma Smothers; and the grandparents who lovingly raised him, Woodrow and Mildred Hester.
Above all, Joe loved his family deeply. He took pride in being present, dependable, and supportive through every season of life. A good and patient man, he treated others the way he wanted to be treated — with kindness, respect, and understanding. His life reflected the values he held close: faith, honesty, patience, and love. Those values will continue to live on through everyone blessed to know him.
He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Elisa Abbott, of the home; his daughter, Amanda Abbott Murillo and son-in-law, Andy Murillo, who lived next door and lovingly helped care for him during his illness; and his three energetic and devoted grandchildren who adored their “Joe,” Conner Coffman, Andru “Javi” Murillo, and Aaron “Kobe” Murillo.
He is also survived by his brothers, Allen Smothers (Shirley) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Tommy Smothers (Misty) of Myrtle Beach, SC; two aunts who were raised alongside him like sisters; Myrtle Rose Hester and Hilda Kinlaw, both of Dublin, NC; his sister-in-law, Wanda Smith of Clinton, NC; and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
The family will receive friends from 4-6pm on Sunday, March 15th at Tar Heel Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held at 4pm on Monday, March 16th at Tar Heel Baptist Church with Reverend Tommy Puryear and Reverend Warren Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Joseph’s life was a testament to simple goodness, hard work, and steadfast faith. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of kindness, devotion, and quiet strength will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Foundation or the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals.
