Lizzie Lee Long Smith, 97, of Elizabethtown, died on Monday, July 16, 2012. She was born on July 22, 1914 to the late James Cannon and Gertie Jacobs Long of Bolton, NC. She was married for 40 years to Edgar Earl Smith, Sr., who predeceased her in death in 1974. Lizzie Lee spent years volunteering in the Elizabethtown Schools and at Trinity Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Elizabethtown Chapter of the Eastern Stars and was their first Worthy Matron. She joined the Bladen County Sheriff's Department in 1963 and served there for 16 years as Office Deputy before retiring in 1976. Her hobbies included gardening and handicrafts but she had a true passion for knitting, crocheting and the endangered art of tatting.
Lizzie is survived by one son, Edgar Earl Smith and wife, Dixie of Houston, TX; one daughter, Bettye Gray Smith Donahue and husband, John of Dewitt, MI; one sister, Velma Oakley of Whiteville; four grandchildren, Susan Witkus and husband, Mike of Haslett, MI, Karen Selin and husband, Todd of Lansing, MI, Brett Smith and wife, Katie of San Antonio, TX and Beverly Smith of Columbia, SC and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 21, 2012 from 2:00 until 2:45 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home. The funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm at the Funeral Home with Rev. Jay Winston officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown Cemetery.
