Lynn King

Lynn Grey King, Sr., 80, of Dublin, North Carolina, passed away on December 5, 2011, at his home. He was born in Dublin on August 6, 1931.



A graduate of High Point College and East Carolina University, he served Bladen County in myriad educational positions for 43 years. He was a teacher and coach at Elizabethtown Jr. - Sr. High School from 1954 to 1962. Appointed principal of Dublin School in 1963, he officiated in this position until 1981. From 1982 to 1985, he served as principal of Elizabethtown Primary School and Bladen County Developmental Center. In May of 1985, he became president of Bladen Community College and remained in this position until his retirement in 1997. Throughout each stage of his educational career, he promoted his educational philosophy of providing students with educational opportunities to develop their greatest potential. In 1997, Governor James B. Hunt recognized King's educational contributions by awarding him the highest civilian honor granted by the state of North Carolina, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.



As a devoted Christian and lifelong member of Singletary United Methodist Church, he served in numerous capacities including: Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Lay Leader, and Official Board Member. Additionally, he was appointed as the Lay Leader for the Wilmington District of the United Methodist Church.



King is survived by his wife of 55 years, Iris McNeill King; son, Lynn Grey King, Jr. and his wife, Shannon Nye King; three grandchildren: Kathryn Grey King, Anna Elizabeth King, and Jacob Nye King; brother, Grady King of Dublin; and sister, Doris Outlaw of Surf City.



He was preceded in death by his parents Lonnie King and Norine Taylor King, and brother Ronald King.



A funeral service is scheduled at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Singletary United Methodist Church in Dublin, NC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the services.
