Margaret Benson Hammond, 81, of Bladenboro passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 22, 2025. She was born and raised in Bladen County, the daughter of the late Thomas Dudley Benson and Mae McLean Benson.
She was the proud mother of daughters, Kim Spurling (Chris), Wendy DiCicco (Stewart Oliver) and Teresa Horton (Steve), all of Bladenboro, stepmother of Rocky Hammond and Regina Hammond Agbayani, loving sister to Linda Benson Williams (Jesse) of Thomasville, doting Mema to her grandchildren Christopher S. Johnson (Meagan), Dustin Spurling (Bri), Savanna Scobie, Cameron Priest, Colby Horton (Tina), Channing Horton (Madison), and Camryn Horton, and great grandchildren Nevaeh Johnson, Margaret Johnson, June Johnson, Adelaide Linge, Lyla Reid Horton, Layken Reece Horton, Stephen Colby Horton, Jr. aka SJ, Josiah Cole and arriving soon, Zephyr Wilson.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Marvin Hammond, William “Bill” Deaver, and Douglas Gordon Hester, son William Lee “Buddy” Deaver, one grandson, Willis Johnson, and siblings, Thelma Lee Julian, Thomas Dudley Benson, Jr., William “Dick” Benson, Pauline Cain, and Helen Francis Hester.
Margaret loved being at home watching her favorite crime shows, getting together with family and friends, and eating cornbread with molasses. Her home away from home was wherever a Bingo game was happening. She loved the thrill of the game and mingling with other bingo enthusiasts. She also enjoyed sewing, dancing, and trips to the mountains. Her family loved to eat her famous fried chicken and gather around her home at Christmas. Margaret will always be remembered for her love of independence, her devotion to her family and her spirited disposition.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, from 6-8 pm at the Bladenboro Chapel of Bladen Gaskins, 800 N. Main Street, Bladenboro. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 26th at 3 pm at Northside Baptist Church in Bladenboro with the Reverend Russell Benson officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Guyton Cemetery in Bladenboro.
