Paul Dowell

Paul Wilson Dowell. PhD, 74, of Shallotte, NC passed away on January 3, 2012 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center from complications following lung carcinoma.



A graduate of McCallie Boys' Academy, Chattanooga, Tenn.; University of Georgia, Albany, Georgia and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee; he taught in myriad educational positions for 32 years. As a young man, he honorably served his country in the US Army. He retired as Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, where he also served as Chairman of the Math Department. Finally, he was a life-long, staunch supporter and avid fan of his Georgia Bulldogs. GO DAWGS!



Mr. Dowell is survived by his wife Dru Dowell; son Adam Dowell of Coralville, Iowa; daughter, Robin Hester Bramble of Hope Mills; sons, Rodney Hester and Keith Hilburn and his wife Sonja of Bladenboro; sister, Sarah Sullivan and husband Bill of Seagrove Beach, Florida; five grandchildren, Justin Dieffenbach of Hope Mills, Kinley and Weston Hilburn of Bladenboro and Cory and Jordan Hester of Bladenboro.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dowell of Ringold, Georgia.



The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 Friday, January 6, 2012 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 6414 Center Road, Bladenboro, NC. The service will follow at 3:00pm with Pastor Thomas R. Whray and Pastor Charles Brust officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Grove Church Cemetery.



At all other times the family will greet friends at the home of Keith and Sonja Hilburn at 1473 Zion Hill Church Rd, Bladenboro.
