Robert T. Suggs of Elizabethtown, NC entered the immediate presence of his Savior on September 15, 2026. Robert was born in Elizabethtown to Fred P. Suggs and Ophelia Blackburn Suggs on January 14, 1938. He and his big sister Lynette were the oldest of many Blackburn grandchildren, so they were a source of much joy, and received a lot of attention from their grandparents, aunts and uncles.
When Robert was just fourteen years old, his father was paralyzed in a farming accident, and Robert had to take over the farming work, under the supervision of his father and mother. Life challenged Robert early, and he rose to meet the challenge, along with the help of many loving family members and friends.
Robert met his true love, Eva Jewel Wyatt, of Evergreen, NC, when they were both in their late teens, and they were married on October 26, 1958. In 1961, Robert and Jewel were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Barbara, and in 1964 their handsome son Bobby came along.
Robert was self-employed as a truck owner/operator, hauling raw milk from dairies all over North Carolina. He also worked for some years as a Bladen County Magistrate and went to work with Eddie Sutton for many years driving a dump truck and hauling a variety of things. Robert was a proud Mason of Bladen County Lodge 646 for 50 years.
Robert loved the outdoors and much of his leisure time was spent hunting, fishing, riding horses, and doing projects on the farm. He came from a singing family, and Robert sang for many years in the choir at Elizabethtown Baptist Church, and throughout his life he lived out his faith through the church’s ministry. He served as a deacon and leader for many years.
Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jewel Suggs, and by his sister Lynette Suggs McDuffie. He is also survived by his daughter Barbara Suggs Lussier (Brian), their children Gibson and Emma and by his son Bobby and daughters Elizabeth and Skylar, and one great grandson, Memphis Suggs.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm in the fellowship hall of Elizabethtown Baptist Church on Saturday, September 19, 2026, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life Service in the church sanctuary at 2 pm with Dr. Charles Royal and Dr. Richard McDuffie Jr. officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Elizabethtown Baptist Church, 1800 W. Broad Street, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.
