Clarkton

Sarah Frances Gooden Melvin, known lovingly to many as Sarah Gooden Melvin, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, at the Elizabethtown Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, closing a remarkable chapter that began on March 9, 1930, in Carvers Creek, North Carolina. Throughout her long and meaningful life, Sarah exemplified kindness, devotion, and steadfastness to those she loved, leaving behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.

Sarah was born to John Alford Gooden and Quessie McQueen Gooden, growing up alongside her siblings in a close-knit North Carolina community. Her early years in Carvers Creek shaped the gentle spirit and unyielding strength she would become known for. She maintained deep family roots and always valued the bonds of kinship and friendship.

Family was central to Sarah’s life. She experienced both the joys of raising her own family and the sorrow of saying goodbye to loved ones who predeceased her, including her beloved husband Carson Melvin, her father John Alford Gooden, her mother Quessie McQueen Gooden, her brother John Daniel Gooden, and her sister Kay Gooden McFerrin.

Those left to cherish her memory include her devoted children: Becky Melvin Brown, Mike Melvin and his wife Marilyn, and John Melvin and his wife Susan, whose lives were deeply enriched by her wisdom and care. She is also survived by her brother Mackie Gooden, who held a special place in her heart. Sarah’s legacy continues in her grandchildren—Diane Baughan and her husband Cullen, Greg Brown, Jennifer Melvin and her fur child Essie, Zachary Melvin and his wife Kaylee, and Ashley Melvin—and her great-grandchildren Quinn Baughan and Tegan Baughan, as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family each of whom she loved dearly.

Sarah’s greatest joy in life was her family. She treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, Diana, Greg, Jennifer, Zach, and Ashley, and her heart grew even fuller with the arrival of her precious great-grandchildren, Quinn and Logan. She also enjoyed when her great-granddog, Essie, visited her. She loved watching her family grow and created countless cherished memories with them that will be treasured forever.  Sarah also had a wonderful church family that she cared deeply for. In her quieter moments, she found happiness tending to her garden, where she lovingly nurtured beautiful flowers and plants. She also enjoyed spending peaceful afternoons coloring, a pastime that reflected her gentle spirit and creative heart.  Sarah never met a stranger. She loved talking to just about anyone in her path. She loved iced coffee almost as much as she loved talking. Her kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for her family and friends will always be remembered.

A series of services honoring Sarah’s life will be held on July 31, 2026, beginning with a visitation for family and friends from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Clarkton Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 10433 N College St, Clarkton, NC. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Clarkton Presbyterian Church, Rev. Barrett Ingram officiating. Sarah will be laid to rest at Clarkton City Cemetery, US-701 BUS, Clarkton, NC.
