Steven Lamont Brown, a proud United States Marine, beloved father, and man of extraordinary character and style, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, with his son Adonis by his side. He was 73 years old.
Born on September 29, 1951, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Steven lived a life defined by service, resilience, and flair. He joined the United States Marine Corps on January 29, 1971, and served with honor for over two decades, including a tour during the Vietnam War. He retired on December 17, 1993, as a Gunnery Sergeant—a title he wore with pride for the rest of his life.
After his military service, Steven transitioned into civilian life with the same determination that made him a successful Marine. He became an insurance agent with Jefferson Pilot, where his charisma, work ethic, and people-first mindset earned him the title of Agent of the Year for six consecutive years—a reflection of the deep trust and respect he built with clients and colleagues alike.
Steven had a passion for the finer things in life: a sharp suit, a clean Cadillac, a good seafood dinner, and a slice of his sister’s sweet potato pie. His fashion sense was unmatched; he was known for dressing up when others dressed down, and his collection of Nehru suits—especially the iconic purple one—became his signature look.
He was a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan who never missed a game, and in his younger years, a naturally gifted drummer. He played in two local bands, “The Stairphonics” and “Mebeus,” and never lost his love for rhythm and music. If fate had taken a different course, he would have been a running back in the NFL—his favorite pastime and secret dream.
Steven was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Mae Grace; sisters Elgen Williams and Mary Davis; and brothers James Grace and Eddie Grace Jr.
He is survived by his three sons: Steven A. Brown and wife Nicole, Seth D. Brown, and Steven L. Brown; and two “adopted sons” in spirit, Calvin and Corey Loving. He also leaves behind two loving sisters: Charlotte L. Hart of College Park, MD, and Stephanie J. Mack (Al) of Manassas, VA, who cherished their brother’s warmth, humor, and loyalty. He was the proud grandfather of Jayla Renae Sulka, Stellan Marie Brown, and Maya Kai Brown.
Steven lived all over the world but chose to make Fayetteville, North Carolina his home for more than 30 years. It is there, among family and fellow service members, that he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
A proud Marine. A stylish soul. A loving father. A loyal friend. Steven Lamont Brown will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025 at 1:00pm at Colvin Funeral Home on 2010 Murchison Road, Fayetteville, NC 28301.
