Tony Lee Merritt, affectionately known as "Mountain Man," passed away peacefully at his home in Elizabethtown on April 22, 2025, at the age of 62. Born on November 23, 1962, Tony was a beacon of love and laughter, deeply committed to his family and community.
Tony's life was marked by his profound love for his family. He is survived by his father, Floyd Merritt, and mother, Pat Merritt, both of Elizabethtown. His legacy continues through his daughter, Amber Kaye Merritt, and his cherished grandchildren, Lacy Merritt and Sydneigh Merritt, who brought him immense joy.
A proud member of the community, Tony was known for his vibrant spirit and his ability to make everyone around him smile. He had a passion for cooking, singing, and bringing laughter to those he loved. Riding his motorcycle brought him freedom and joy, and he took great pride in his work with his father at Merritt's Pottery.
Tony's adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors left an indelible mark on those who knew him. As President of the Confederate Riders bike club, he fostered a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie, dedicating his time to organizing successful fundraisers that uplifted the community.
Tony shared a close bond with his brother, Dwayne Merritt, with whom he was often described as "two peas in a pod." Together, they created countless memories that will be treasured by their family.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday, April 24th at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Friday, April 25th in the Merritt Cemetery 81 Sweet Home Church Road Elizabethtown, NC 28337. Reverend Dale Taylor and Reverend Jim Woodruff will officiate the service.
Tony's presence will be profoundly missed by his family and friends, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cynthia J. Merritt, whose love was a guiding force in his life. As they reunite, we celebrate the warmth and laughter he brought to all of us.
