William Sasser

William "Calvin" Sasser of Elizabethtown entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning at his home in Elizabethtown surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Retha Sasser and one sister, Betty Mae Sasser. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty T. Sasser of the home. His children, William Michael Sasser and wife Anne of Elizabethtown and Jean Sasser Clark and husband Keith, also of Elizabethtown. Grandchildren: William Stanley Sasser and wife Julie, Christopher Sasser and wife Natalie, Wesley Sasser and wife Ashley, Brooke Sasser McMichael and husband Mark, Blake Clark and Holden Clark. Great-Grandchildren: William Britt Sasser, Coley Sasser, Mollie Sasser, Maylin McMichael, Cooper Sasser, Finley Sasser, Carter Sasser, Mark William McMichael and Mary Grace Sasser. Siblings: Irvin Sasser and wife Betty, Lois Willetts and Kenneth Sasser, along with many other family members and friends.

Calvin was born in the Pleasant Plains community of Columbus County and grew up on the family farm and attended Pleasant Plains Baptist Church. He graduated from Whiteville High in 1950, where he was captain of the basketball team and voted most athletic. He married the love of his life, Mrs. Betty T. Sasser on 7/19/1952. Calvin served two years in the United States Army. The family moved to Elizabethtown, NC in 1958 where Calvin began working at Kinlaw Furniture Store and the family joined Elizabethtown Baptist Church. He eventually purchased Kinlaw Furniture Store from the Smith family and he operated the store, working six days a week until the time of his death. Many family members and friends have worked at "the furniture store" over the years and two long time coworkers of over 40 years held a special place in his heart: Ms. Virginia Allen and Mr. Douglas McKoy, both of Elizabethtown. Calvin served the community in many roles over the years including being a member of Kiwanis and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served the Lord through his work at the Elizabethtown Baptist Church serving on the Board of Deacons and many other capacities through the years. He was also a member of the BF Rollins Sunday school class for many years.

The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 2-3:30 pm in the fellowship hall of Elizabethtown Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 4 pm in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow the services in the Elizabethtown City Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Elizabethtown Baptist Church or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
